The brittlebush is a member of the sunflower family. It can grow 2 to 5 feet high, forming a leafy bush. It has bright yellow flowers that bloom from March to June. It has 8 to 18 rays surrounding the yellow center disk. It's leaves are a silver-grayish color and are 1 to 4 inches long.

The Brittlebush can be found in dry slopes or desert washes. It is native to the Mojave and Sonoran deserts of southeastern California, Nevada, southwestern Utah, western Arizona and northwestern Mexico. Because brittlebush branches contain a fragrant resin, Native Americans used to chew the branches. Also, in California's first churches, the branches were burned as incense.
