Pollen Collection - SEM Images Pollen is a mass of microspores in a seed plant that usually appears as fine dust. Each grain of pollen is a minute body and can have various shapes and structures. It is formed in the male apparatus (anther) of a plant, then transported by e.g. wind, water or insects to the female structure (pistil) of another plant where fertilization occurs. Each wall structure of a pollen grain has very unique characteristics! Often a plant can be identified by analyzing the structure of the pollen grain. However, there are cases in which pollen grains of very similar structure are not closely related at all! So much pollen is produced, that its a significant component of the airborne constituents (particles) of the Earth's atmosphere. |
