Seashells you find washed up on the beach were at one time homes for animals that lived in the sea, such as, mollusks. These sea animals produce this hard outer covering in order to protect their soft bodies. A shell is formed through secretions and made up of nacre, conchiolin, calcite or aragonite, and calcium carbonate.
