The Striped-Tail Scorpion is one of three species of scorpions common
to the deserts of Arizona. However, all scorpions give birth to live young
as did the one in the above photographs. Depending on food supply and
weather, the gestation period of the scorpion can vary from 3 to 18 months
and then an average of 26 baby scorpions are born. It is possible for
a scorpion to give birth to 105 young scorpions if the conditions are
right. After birth, the young scorpions climb up their mother's legs and
onto her back and remain there until their first molt at which time they
leave before they become dinner for their mother.
