Grasshoppers are long, slender insects with wings, powerful hind legs, and mandibles for chewing.  Generally they range in size from .5in - 4in (1cm - 10cm) in length. Grasshoppers have a front pair of wings and a back pair, which are often brightly colored.  Grasshoppers also have three pair of legs, of which only the back pair are used for jumping.  Thanks to their back legs, grasshoppers can jump up to 20 times their body length!  Although male and female grasshoppers both possess the organs which allow them to sing, it is often only the male who performs the song.

There are almost 9,000 species of grasshoppers in the order Orthoptera.  Wow!  That is a lot of grasshoppers!
