The first floppy disk was invented by IBM engineers led by Alen Shugart in 1971. it was the first time data could be carried in "electronic format". the first "Floppy" as we call them now was eight inches, and made of plastic which was then covered with a metal oxide. The term floppy was adopted due to its flexibility and somewhat durable nature. this first floppy held 100 KB's of data, today the average floppy can hold 1,440 KB's of data.
